Terry O’Neill
TERRY O’NEILL (1938-) became famous for his legendary portraits in the 1960s and 1970s. Through his career for over 60 years, his photographs have been acquired by several of the world’s largest galleries, important private collections and is a must for the serious art collector. In recent years, several of his iconic photographs have also been sold for record figures at the auction houses.
O’Neill got his breakthrough with his portraits of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones in the early 1960s. In Hollywood, he welcomed the majorities of the film and music industry, and his authentic and unconventional photographs of legends like Frank Sinatra, Brigitte Bardot, Judy Garland, Faye Dunaway (whom he later married) and David Bowie have been standing as icons in the recent history of photography.
The art of capturing the person behind fame is one of O’Neill’s most obvious talents. It is the delicate human and vulnerability that shines through many of his famous portraits. The key to succeeding in a portrait of a celebrity is, according to O’Neill, to follow them over a sustained period of time, take a lot of photos and even stay in the background.
